During the coarse of a day at work I will ,from time to time pass by many coworkers in the hallways, and to not be rude I always try to address them or say something, like how are you? or Are you having a good day? Well sometimes people will trick me and throw out a question that really trips me up. The other day I was walking down the stairs and one of my coworkers said to me "Hi there." and my reply was "I'm good you?" Why did I say that? Clearly this person must think I am a total jerk, because obviously I wasn't listening. I walked away feeling really awkward about the whole thing. The worst part is that this has happened to me before. Someone asked me "Got any fun plans this weekend?" my reply again was "I'm good you?"
Maybe I am in too much of a hurry, but I think I am going to start pretending that I'm deaf. I'm sure that will go over well too. I can just see someone asking how I am and my reply is a smile and a shrug of the shoulders. I really think small talk in the stairs should be done away with. Are we really interested in what Joe is doing this weekend? What about Jane when we ask her how she is doing today? Am I really ready or interested in someone telling me their life story or their latest drama... I believe the answer is NO!
So I thought about it what we all need are Status Updates that float above our heads. So we can let people know just what we are up too. This is a perfect idea. We could all update our status with outrageous political comments or funny sayings. You know, instead of stopping someone in the the hall outside of the restroom you could look up and read "Preston has to pee really bad!" Now I know that I should not stop him and just let him go on his way, or you could read "Preston is sad that no one invited him to lunch." with this simple idea we could save on all the uncomfortable small talk, and when we saw something we liked we could just add a comment to their status for them and everyone else to read on their own time. I think everyone would really dig this idea and my awkward problem would be solved.
